PAVAS Calibrate Speed at a Variable speed
This menu is used to calibrate the speed at any speed. It is suggested that the calibration be performed at the highest speed legally attainable. The process is designed to be performed by just one person which maybe the driver. To orchestrate this, the procedure is broken down into a number of steps which are used to lock and unlock or capture the speed reading.
The first step is to select the menu and drive the vehicle to the desired speed as given by an external reference, typically a GPS unit. At this time the display will show a message Locked Motion and no speed updates.
The next step is to unlock the speed readings by pressing the Select button. If a Regularity button is installed, this can be used instead.
Now the display will read Update Motion and uncalibrated speed readings will be displayed. Now if the reference speed is stable and appropriate, it should be noted.
Then press the Select button. This captures and locks the speed reading. Note the speed reading can be unlocked by pressing Select again.
Stop the vehicle. Once the vehicle has stopped, the display will change to Indicated and True (speeds). The cursor will be set to the True speed value which can be edited to the value noted from the reference.
Once this is complete, the Select button can be pressed. The calibration factor will be calculated for 60 kph and the display then shows the number of pulses that will occur at 60 Kph with this calibration factor. This values in used in Comparison speed measurements.
One error source is that a reference used to determine if the speed is usually a GPS unit which typically, only displays the speed to +/- 1 kph. The GPS speed has best accuracy if the vehicle is traveling in a straight line on a level service.
